The Drayton Valley Thunder are hoping to finish the regular season strong. The Lloydminister Bobcats paid a visit to the Drayton Valley Omniplex on Feb. 24, where the Thunder beat the Bobcats 3-1.
The Thunder were first on the board when Kadyn Chabot scored unassisted at 5:06. As the buzzer sounded on the first, the Thunder had a 1-0 lead.
The Thunder wasted no time in the second period. Lucas Krol scored unassisted and short-handed at 2:30 to make it 2-0 Thunder. But the Bobcats finally got on the board at 7:56. Ethan Aucoin scored on the power play, with Ben Bygrove and Jayven Leslie getting the assists. At the end of the second, the Thunder still had a one goal advantage, leading the Bobcats 2-1.
Heading into the third, the score stayed 2-1 until the final seconds. At 19:27, Hayden Fechner of the Thunder scored on an empty net. Rylan Brown and Aiden Kruhlak were credited with the assists. The final score was 3-1 for the Thunder.
The Thunder did outshoot the Bobcats 39-36. The Bobcats were better on the power play, going 1 for 2. The Thunder were 0 for 5.
The Bobcats get their chance for retribution on Feb. 25, as they stay in Drayton Valley to play the Thunder’s final home game of the season. The Thunder will wrap up the regular season on the road, as they pop up to Fort McMurray on Feb. 27 for one last game against the Oil Barons.
Presuming there are no major upsets over the weekend, the Thunder will be heading into the AJHL playoffs in fourth place in the North Division. The Thunder currently have 74 points and a record of 32-16-10.
