The Drayton Valley Thunder are happy to be home. After a six game road trip where they went 1 and 5, the Thunder were home on Feb. 15 and beat the Whitecourt Wolverines 5-2.
The Thunder were off to a commanding start, with three unanswered goals in the first period. Sammy May scored at 13:07, with assists from Drew Sutton and Evan Forrest. Ethan Browne then scored 20 seconds later on the power play. The assists went to Daniel Kernaghan and Jack Silverberg. Andrew Larson, with an assist from Stephen Kirkpatrick, then scored at 16:01. The first ended with the Thunder leading 3-0.
The Wolverines finally got on the board at 1:30 in the second period. Christiano Aiello scored on the power play, with Chase Broda and Jackson Bohan getting the assists. The Thunder responded with two more goals of their own. Andrew Larson scored at 5:21, getting the assists from Hayden Fechner and Stephen Kirkpatrick. Drew Sutton then slipped one in at 12:20, thanks to an assist from Sammy May and Evan Forrest. The Wolverines got one more before the buzzer sounded on the second, as Chase Broda scored at 17:09. Tyler Mahan got the assist. The second period ended with the Thunder in a 5-2 lead.
And that’s the way it stayed for a scoreless third period. Wolverines goalie Carson Ironside managed to stop all eight shots on net, while Thunder goalie Logan Falk did similar with all 12 shots thrown his way.
Despite the loss, the Wolverines outshot the Thunder 45-33. The Thunder made up for it by having the more successful power play. The Thunder were 1 for 1, while the Wolverines were 1 for 3.
Feb. 15’s home game for the Thunder was just a quick stop for a shower and a shave, as the Thunder are on the road again. The Thunder will be in Fort McMurray this weekend – Feb. 18 and 19 – for two games against the Oil Barons. Then they are off to Sherwood Park on Feb. 21 to meet the Crusaders.
