Brazeau County is going ahead with a plan to develop Berrymoor Campground.
At Brazeau County’s Feb. 8 meeting, council passed a motion to develop the day use area at the campground. The goal is to complement the existing boat launch.
Some of the improvements that will be added to the campground include a parking area, outhouse, and other improvements to be carried out in 2022.
The price tag on the improvements in $57,147. The funds will be coming from the County’s Parks Restricted Surplus reserves.
Due to the unavailability of grant funding, a plan to develop the campground into a group campground will not be going ahead.
Crime is in flux in Brazeau County.
At Brazeau County’s Feb. 8 meeting, Staff Sergeant Erin Matthews of the Drayton Valley RCMP and Staff Sergeant Dwayne Moore of the Breton RCMP were on hand to deliver their crime statistics.
For the parts of Brazeau County that fall under Drayton Valley’s jurisdiction, there was a one per cent increase in Criminal Code offences between October 2021 and January 2022, when compared to the same time period in 2020.
Over the year 2021, total Criminal Code offences decreased by five per cent, with crimes against persons decreasing by six per cent when compared to the numbers for 2020.
For the parts of Brazeau County that fall under Breton’s jurisdiction, total Criminal Code offences were up to 205 between October 2021 and January 2022. There were 151 in the same time period the year prior.
Over 2021, there were a total of 862 Criminal Code offences, a 33 per cent increase from the 648 in 2020.
Both detachments have received the results of the 2022 Policing Priorities survey conducted in January, and will use the results when setting their priorities for the 2022 fiscal year. The RCMP’s fiscal year begins on Apr. 1.
Brazeau County is taking a look at natural burials.
County council directed administration to start exploring options to allow for natural burials in Brazeau Country.
In a natural burial, there is no casket, and the deceased is not embalmed. This allows for a natural and environmentally-friendly decomposition process.
