The Drayton Valley Thunder only had one game this past weekend, which sadly resulted in one loss. The Thunder were up in Whitecourt to take on the Wolverines on Feb. 4, where the Wolverines won 2-1 in a shootout.
It was a rather quiet game, with scoreless first and second periods. Wolverines goalie Carson Ironside proved unstoppable to that point, letting nothing past, as was Thunder goalie Jackson Berry who proved equally resolute.
The Wolverines were first on the board in the third period though. Caleb MacDonald scored on the power play at 4:28, with assists from Jayden Watson and Tyler Mahan. The Thunder tied the game at 10:03, however, as Daniel Kernaghan picked up assists from Grayson Reid and Lucas Krol. With a 1-1 tie, the game was going to overtime.
After a scoreless overtime period, the game went to a shootout. The Thunder came up empty, while Teydon Trembecky scored the winner for the Wolverines.
The two teams were evenly matched, each getting 34 shots on goal. As for their power plays, the Wolverines were 1 for 6, while the Thunder were 0 for 4.
So far, the Thunder are 0-2 on their six game road trip. Next stop is Lloydminister on Feb. 7 to face the Bobcats, then on Feb. 9 it is a return trip to Whitecourt for a rematch with the Wolverines.
Despite the weekend loss, the Thunder managed to clinch a playoff spot. The Thunder are currently sitting in fourth in the Viterra AJHL North Division, with 62 points and a record of 27-14-8.
