It was a hockey game that raised a lot of money for several good causes.
Sept. 19, 2021 was the annual Drayton Valley Alumni Game. Former players for the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames descended on the Drayton Valley Omniplex for a charity hockey game.
The Town of Drayton Valley participated in the event by hosting the official Tailgate Party.
More than $55,000 was raised, and was then donated to various local charities.
One of those charities was the Town of Drayton Valley’s Zero Fee Tuition Program. The program provides financial assistance for Drayton Valley residents to attend post-secondary educational institutions.
On Feb. 3, 2022, representatives of the Alumni Game Committee came by the Town offices to deliver the cheque. $16,510.83 was donated to the Zero Fee Tuition Program.
On hand to receive the cheque were Drayton Valley mayor Nancy Dodds and councillors Monika Sherriffs, Tom McGee, Amila Gammana, and Rick Evans. Delivering the cheque were alumni committee members Mardi Dancey, Chris Walsh, and Mae Chow.
Other recipients of the money raised from the game were the Drayton Valley Food Bank, Rotary Club of Drayton Valley, and DV Community Foundation.
