The Town of Drayton Valley got a refresher on the birds and the bees. Well, just the bees.
At their regular meeting Jan. 19, council received a visit from Drayton resident Kerry Doran. Doran wants the Town to bring in an urban beekeeping project.
Doran proposed a two year program. In year one, Doran’s organization would get a permit from the town for the Urban Beekeeping Pilot Program for two years, start the first hive, and submit regular reports to council on their progress.
Year two would open up the program to the community. Officials say they would create a community plan, an education plan, and use that to start building interest in the community, a “buzz” if you will.
The program would be overseen by the Town’s Sustainability Committee, local mentors of the Apiary Association, and local community members.
Drayton Valley mayor Nancy Dodds says council found the project intriguing.
“It’s very exciting to hear that we have people in the community who are excited by something like this,” says Dodds. “I think it is definitely something that council wanted to request administration to seek additional information on, just to see if this is something that potentially we would maybe want to see in the community.”
Town administration will be doing more research on the project, and bringing their findings to council.
