It looks like the start of a streak for the Drayton Valley Thunder. Their road trip through southern Alberta resulted in three wins over the weekend.
The first win came on Jan. 28 as they beat the Okotoks Oilers 3-1.
The Thunder were first on the board on the power play at 16:40 in the first period. Kadyn Chabot scored the goal with the assist from Brett Bamber and Ethan Browne. At the end of the first, the Thunder had a 1-0 lead.
The Thunder increased their lead at 1:09 in the second. Ethan Browne got the goal, thanks to an assist from Hunter Price. The Oilers finally got on the board at 8:54, as Conyr Hellyer picked up the assist from Brody Maguire and Carter Massier. But the Thunder again increased their lead at 16:23, as Brett Bamber scored courtesy an assist from Brody Tallman. At the end of the second, the Thunder were leading 3-1, and things stayed that way through a scoreless third period.
The Thunder managed to outshoot the Oilers 30-23. The Thunder fared better on the power play, going 1 for 5, while the Oilers were 0 for 2.
The Thunder then hopped a bus over to Canmore for a game against the Canmore Eagles on Jan. 29. That game was a little tighter, as the Thunder won 2-1 in the shootout.
The Thunder were once again first on the board, scoring on the power play at 16:52. Once again, the Thunder’s first goal was scored by Kadyn Chabot. This time, the assist came from Brody Tallman and Hunter Price. The first ended with Thunder in a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles answered early in the second period. Ethan Schaeffer scored on the power play at 1:59, with the assist from Isaac Suppin. The second period ended with a 1-1 tie. The game stayed that way through scoreless third and overtime periods, forcing the shootout.
Ethan Browne and Moe Hakim each scored in the shootout, while the Eagles could not get one past Thunder goalie Jackson Berry. The game went to the Thunder, 2-1.
Despite the Thunder’s victory, the Eagles had the more dominant game, outshooting the Thunder 40-32. The Thunder went 1 for 3 on the power play, while the Eagles were 1 for 4.
From Canmore, the Thunder were off to the big city. It was another tight game, as the Thunder beat the Calgary Canucks 5-4 in overtime on Jan. 30.
This time, the Thunder were not first on the board. Matthew Brunton scored at 14:50, with an assist from Daniel Rozsival and Justin Baker. The first ended with the Canucks holding a 1-0 lead.
The Canucks then increased their lead in the second. Matt Corbet slipped one in at 5:08, thanks to an assist from Dylan Price and Easton Inglis. The second ended with the Canucks looking secure in a 2-0 lead.
The Thunder came to life in the third period. Lucas Krol finally got the Thunder on the board at 7:50, with the assist from Daniel Kernaghan and Adam Oates. The Canucks increased their lead at 11:04, as Easton Inglis got the assist from Warren Marcotte and Dylan Price. Inglis got another at 17:36, thanks to an assist from Dylan Price. The Thunder then responded with three in a row. Ethan Browne scored at 18:22, picking up the assist from Brett Bamber and Kadyn Chabot. Hunter Price then scored at 19:06, with assists from Chabot and Grayson Reid. After getting those two assists, Chabot got one of his own at 19:34 to tie the game, thanks to assists from Ethan Browne and Brett Bamber. Thanks to Chabot, the game was going to overtime.
It was all over at 1:01 into overtime, as Brown and Browne scored the winter for the Thunder. Rylan Brown got the goal, while Ethan Browne got the assist. The game ended with a spectacular come-from-behind win for the Thunder, 5-4.
The Thunder outshot the Canucks, 37-26. The two teams were both unsuccessful on the power play. The Thunder were 0 for 4, while the Canucks were 0 for 3.
Even with the wins, the Thunder are holding steady in fourth place in the Viterra AJHL North Division. They currently have 55 points, with a record of 26-13-7.
The Thunder now return home to Drayton Valley for a home-and-home series against the Sherwood Park Crusaders. Feb. 1 the Crusaders come to Drayton. Feb. 2, the Thunder head to Sherwood Park.
