Breton RCMP were in the right place at the right time to rescue two people from a sinking car near Buck Lake.
Breton RCMP share that, on Nov. 26, 2021, they were dispatched to an unrelated complaint near Buck Creek. The officers were heading west on Highway 616 near Range Road 62 when they were flagged down a visibly upset female. The officers were near Buck Lake.
One of the officers stopped and spoke to the female. The 47-year old from Brazeau County explained that the vehicle she was driving had gone off the road, down a slope, and into a coulee. She also told officers that there were still two occupants stuck inside the vehicle.
Breton RCMP report that the three officers immediately checked out the scene and found tracks in the snow. The tracks lead them to a car where the front end had broken through the ice of the pond. The officers made their way down the snowy slope and extracted the two occupants. Moments later, the vehicle sank below the surface.
The two occupants were a 26-year old female from Drayton Valley, and a 4-year old child. RCMP put them and the female driver in one of their vehicles to keep them warm until Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived. EMS assessed the three people and released them to a family member.
In a statement, Breton RCMP Staff Sergeant Dwayne Moore says this highlights the unique demands placed on RCMP officers.
“I am relieved my officers were in the right place at the right time and were able to assist the vehicle occupants so that everyone got home safely,” says Moore.
