It was a narrow victory for the Drayton Valley Thunder on Wednesday, as they beat the Whitecourt Wolverines 3-2 in a shootout.
The Thunder got things going at 3:47 in the first period when Hunter Price scored, getting assists from Moe Hakim and Tyler Blocha. The Thunder and Wolverines were evenly matched in the first period, with each getting 11 shots on net.
The Wolverines managed to tie things up at 1-1- when Tyler Mahan scored, thanks to an assist from Cooper Smyl at 1:16 of the second period. The Thunder made up for it on the power play, however, as Rylan Brown scored, getting assists from Tyler Blocha and Hunter Price at 11:45. Again, the Wolverines and the Thunder were evenly matched in the second, with each getting 11 shots on net.
The Wolverines managed to tie the game 2-2 at 9:35 in the third, as Christiano Aiello scored, with an assist from Cooper Smyl. The Thunder then poured it on, trying to avoid overtime. They outshot the Wolverines three to one, but it was not enough.
After a scoreless overtime period, the game went to a shootout. Chase Broda got one in for the Wolverines, but Moe Hakim and Stephen Kirkpatrick each scored for the Thunder, giving the Thunder the win.
The Thunder now rise to fourth in the Viterra AJHL North Division. The Thunder head to Olds on Nov. 5 to take on the Grizzlys, then return home to the Drayton Valley Omniplex Nov. 7 to kick off a four game home stand.
