The Town of Drayton Valley is continuing its work on creating a combative sports commission.
The new town council got an update on the timeline from Town administration at their first meeting Oct. 27.
A combative sports commission is a governing body for sports like boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA). The creation of one for Drayton Valley was sparked by the gym, SBG Drayton Valley, who would like to start hosting MMA tournaments.
Administration stated that, at the next council meeting on Nov. 3, council will be presented with all the information administration has gathered so far. This includes legal positions, insurance information, and information gleaned from other towns that have a combative sports commission.
Representatives of SBG Drayton Valley will also be in attendance to answer any questions council may have.
This will be followed by a public hearing at council’s Nov. 24 meeting.
Drayton mayor Nancy Dodds inquired if there could be more public engagement.
Administration responded that the public hearing is the minimum required. If council would like to do more, however, then administration could have some options for them to choose from on Nov. 3.
Councillor Amila Gammana asked if it would be possible for council to meet with the council of another town that has a combative sports commission.
Administration replied, they were certain they had gathered all the information needed from the administrations of towns with a commission, but if council would like to meet with another council, then that could be arranged.
Council accepted this information, and will revisit the issue Nov. 3.
