November is just around the corner, and for the Faith Covenant Church Food Bank in Breton, it can be one of the busier months of the year.
With the school year — and its costs — in full swing and parents working to make Christmas magic for their families, a food bank representative says the financial challenge normally leads to more people leaning on the food bank.
The Breton food bank serves more than just the village, offering its services to all of Brazeau County and the western region of County of Wetaskiwin No. 10.
Officials say the food bank’s hampers provide about seven days of food for every member of a family unit based on standard serving rates. They primarily follow a standard menu focused on protein, dairy, breads and non-perishables.
“We keep our hampers very basic, and we try to keep them as healthy as we can,” a food bank representative commented.
They added that donations from the community contribute directly to food stock. Through the Faith Covenant Church, the food bank does not pay rent or utilities, so overhead costs are minimal.
More information on donations and hampers is available by calling 780-696-3669. Food bank representatives ask potential users to apply for a hamper by 12 p.m. on Thursdays at the absolute latest; a voicemail with your name and the number of people in your household can be left in voicemail box #3.
