The Drayton Valley Thunder had two road games against the Fort McMurray Oil Barons over the weekend and were edged out 5-4 in overtime Friday, but more than doubled up on the host in a 6-2 victory Saturday.
On Sept. 25, the Thunder’s Ethan Hunter scored the only point in period one, with assistance from Colson Ganser and Keston Beagle.
With Drayton leading 1-0 to start the second frame, the Oil Barons tied things up 1-1 just 21 seconds into the new period. About two minutes later, that tie became a 2-1 lead for the home squad.
Then at 3:50, the Thunder’s Will Jamieson and Oil Baron Griffin Gidney earned 10-minute majors for misconduct, in addition to roughing minors. Drayton’s Loughlan McMullan, Dylan Snelgrove, and Fort McMurray’s Keeghan Dunn also went to the box with minor penalties, giving the Oil Barons the man advantage.
While on the power play, Fort McMurray scored at 5:01 to make it 3-1.
Fourteen minutes into the frame, Taynton Lavender netted one for Drayton Valley, narrowing the Oil Barons’ lead to 3-2. Oskar Aitken-Salmons and Daniel Zhou assisted.
Then, with just eight seconds left in the period, Ryan Schrock and Caedem Emmett helped Damian Hill tie things up 3-3.
The Thunder held on to the tie until 8:09, of the third period when Fort McMurray scored again to take a 4-3 lead. Drayton Valley’s Dylan Snelgrove tied it again, however, making it 4-4 at 11:30.
The teams stayed tied until the buzzer sounded, sending the game into overtime, where Fort McMurray scored after 3:14 of play for the 5-4 win.

The following night, the Thunder’s Damian Hill opened the scoring in period one for another 1-0 lead.
The Oil Barons answered at the start of period two, quickly tying it 1-1. At the same time, Fort McMurray’s Carter Ellsworth earned a minor for unsportsmanlike conduct, putting Drayton Valley on the power play.
The Thunder’s Dylan Snelgrove took the opportunity to put Drayton Valley back in the lead with 2-1. The helpers went to Oskar Aitken-Salmons and Tayton Lavender.
At 5:07, Drayton’s Ethan Hunter and Fort McMurray’s Nathan Castonguay both earned majors for fighting and game misconducts. Then at 10:46, the Thunder’s Taynton Lavender, Jerrett Ross and Daniel Zhou, and Fort McMurray’s Cash Brebant, Carter Ellsworth and Carson Ralph were all served roughing minors. Ellsworth also earned another 10-minute misconduct penalty, but neither team ended up on the power play.
About two minutes later, Oscar Aitken-Salmons netted an insurance goal for Drayton Valley to make it 3-1 Thunder, with assistance from Grant Gliege and Dylan Snelgrove.
At 15:16, another Oil Baron went to the box for a hooking minor, putting the Thunder on the man advantage. Caedem Emmett took the opportunity to score, boosting Drayton Valley to a 4-1 lead. He was assisted by Will Jamieson and Dane Pyatt.
Period three started with another penalty, this time for holding, putting Fort McMurray down a man.
DRayton Valley’s Damian Hill scored his second goal of the game upping the lead to 5-1 while on the power play, with Taynton Lavender on the assist.
The Thunder’s Daniel Zhou then netted a sixth goal at 11:11, with the helper going to Taynton Lavender.
Fort McMurray scored a shorthanded goal with 1:36 left in the game for the 6-2 finish.
The Drayton Valley Thunder are back on the ice on Oct. 2 in Whitecourt to face the Wolverines.
