The Drayton Valley Thunder are heading into the week with two pre-season wins under their belt.
Friday, Sept. 4, they defeated the Devon Xtreme 8-1 at the GFL Twin Arena before heading home for a 4-3 victory over the Grande Prairie Storm on Saturday.
September 4
The Thunder’s Oskar Aitken-Salmons scored the only goal of period one, giving Drayton Valley an early 1-0 lead. Erick Schrock and Kingston Sauter had the assists.
Damian Hill boosted the lead to 2-0 less than five minutes into the second frame, with helpers going to Dane Hancock and Caedem Emmett.
Ethan Hunter netted another at 5:36 to bring the Thunder’s lead to 3-0, with assistance from Ryan Schrock.
About eight minutes into the second, Dylan Snelgrove tallied a power play goal to make it 4-0. Emmett and Sauter assisted.
Just 20 seconds later, Emmett would score another for the Thunder, making it 5-0, with assists from Hancock and Kyler Sorochak.
At 11:04, the Thunder’s Will Jamieson and the Xtreme’s Nolan Eastwood each earned 10-minute misconduct penalties. Eastwood was also served a roughing minor.
At 13:22, after the powerplay expired, Damian Hill netted a sixth point for Drayton Valley, and Dane Hancock assisted.
A cross-checking minor by Drayton’s Kolton Bigras put the Xtreme on a powerplay at 18:27, and at 19:08, Devon finally scored, cutting the deficit to 6-1.
The third frame started with a power play goal by the Thunder’s Colson Ganser, putting Drayton ahead 7-1.
Schrock would net one more for Drayton, making it an 8-1 final score.
September 5
Oskar Aitken-Salmons opened the scoring for the Thunder again on Saturday, this time about 15 minutes into the first frame. Taynton Lavender assisted with the power play goal.
In period two, Caedem Emmett netted another power play goal for a 2-0 lead, with assists from Colson Ganser and Will Jamieson.
Damian Hill bumped the lead to 3-0 about three minutes later. The helper went to Jack Sears.
The Storm started firing back in the third frame, netting three goals in the span of about five minutes to tie the score 3-3.
Emmett secured the win for the Thunder at 15:58 with an unassisted goal.

The Thunder continue pre-season action on home ice at 2 p.m. on Sept. 12, taking on the Fort McMurray Oil Barons.
