Dust off your cowboy hats and shine your boots, because the 11th Annual Drayton Valley Pro Rodeo kicks off Friday night.
Every year, the Drayton Valley Pro Rodeo Society draws cowboys from across North America to compete in the event.
Performance One begins at 7 p.m. on May 1. The second is scheduled for 7 p.m. on May 2 and the third for 2 p.m. on May 3. It all takes place at the Team Auctions Centre.
Featured rodeo events include: breakaway roping, bareback riding, tie-down roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, ladies barrel racing, team roping and bull riding.
Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for seniors, $15 for children aged six to 14 and free for those under five. Only cash will be accepted; an ATM is on site.
Saturday, May 2, will feature some special events, starting with the Rodeo Parade at 11 a.m. The parade is non-motorized and features only horses. The route begins at Mitch’s Restaurant and ends at the Wendy’s on 50 Avenue.
At 2 p.m., it’s time for the Annual Chili Cookoff at CR Feed and Ranch Supply. Competitors include Growlees Bowls on the Go and Catering, Taco Bites Cantina, Drayton Valley Insurance, Roots of Resilience Charter School, Cobblestone Cafe and You’ve Been Tipped by Jackie.
After the main rodeo events, at 9:30 p.m., attendees can head to the Mackenzie Conference Centre for the Drayton Valley Lions Club’s Horses and Hooch Cabaret and Rodeo Dance. The event is for adults only and tickets are available at the doors.
Local businesses are also celebrating the event with some breakfast and lunch opportunities.
Barbecues will take place around town from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, May 1, including at:

- Scotiabank
On May 3, the Drayton Valley and District Agricultural Society will host a pancake breakfast from 9-11:30 a.m. at 5015 Industrial Road.
