The Drayton Valley Thunder are off to a spectacular start in the AJHL regular season.
This past weekend, the Thunder scored back-to-back wins against the Grande Prairie Storm.
On Sept. 17, the Thunder beat the Storm 5-4.
Drew Sutton with the Thunder scored the first goal of the game, with the assist from Evan Forrest and Jack Silverberg. But, Zack Brooks of the Storm scored near the end of the first to tie the game 1-1.
Dylan Price of the Thunder scored early in the second period with an assist from Grayson Reid and Kadyn Chabot. Edge Lambert of the Storm scored near the end of the second period, though, to bring things to a 2-2 tie.
The Thunder dominated in the first half of the third period, first with Kadyn Chabot scoring with the assist from Brett Bamber and Ty Whitford. That was quickly followed by an unassisted goal from Drew Sutton. But the Strom responded in kind, first with Robert Pizzey scoring with the assist from Lukas Konashuk and Wesley Golden, and then Kayden Skulmoski with the assist from Hudson Foley and Brandon Casey. With a 4-4 tie, the game was going into overtime.
Rylan Brown scored the game-winning goal for Drayton Valley, 1:44 into overtime.
On Sept. 18, the Thunder crushed the Storm 5-2.
Luca Ricci from the Thunder got the first goal, with an assist from Brett Bamber and Stephen Kirkpatrick in the first period. The Storm soon responded with a goal from Edge Lambert, assisted by Ethan Strang and Zach Brooks. Drew Sutton from the Thunder scored one last time in the first, with the assist from Jack Silverberg, for the Thunder to end the period with a 2-1 lead.
The Thunder, however, scored early in the second and just wouldn’t let up. First from Evan Forrest, with the assist from Jack Silverberg and Geoff Bjarnason. That was quickly followed by Rylan Brown with the assist from Jack Silverberg and Luca Ricci, and then Geoff Bjarnason with the assist from Luca Ricci and Hunter Price. The Storm managed to get one more on the board though before the end of the second period, thanks to Zach Brooks with the assist from Edge Lambert and Benjamin Keon.
The score was 5-2 at the end of the second period, and remained that way for a scoreless third period.
The Thunder are back in action on Sept. 21, when the Sherwood Park Crusaders come to town.
