The Drayton Valley Thunder are on a three-game skid after a 5-4 overtime loss to the Grande Prairie Storm at Wednesday’s AJHL Showcase.
The Storm opened the scoring in period one to finish the frame with a 1-0 lead.
In period two, the Thunder’s Antonio Bevacqua scored less than two minutes in, with assistance from Dylan Snelgrove and Taynton Lavender, tying the score at 1-1. Lavender kept the momentum from his assist going with a solo goal of his own at 4:35.
Now one point behind, at 5:39, Grande Prairie’s Ethan Kronewitt went to the box for cross checking. Drayton’s Damian Hill took advantage of the power play at 6:07, bringing the score to 3-1. Lavender and Caedem Emmett got the helpers.
Grande Prairie then scored two powerplay goals before the frame was done, tying the teams at 3-3, thanks to hooking and roughing minors to Dane Pyatt and Breken Northgrave.
In the third, Drayton kept their defence up until 16:33, when the Storm scored on the powerplay again to gain a one-point lead.
With assistance from Damian Hill and Daniel Zhou, Drayton’s Dane Pyatt tied things up again 4-4 at 18:02.
The match then went into overtime, where Ethan Kronewitt scored the winning goal for Grande Prairie.
The Storm also outshot Drayton Valley 32-17.
The Drayton Valley Thunder remain in fifth place in the AJHL South Division, just two points ahead of the Olds Grizzlys, with a record of 11-21-3-1.
