The Town of Drayton Valley’s Clean Energy Improvement Tax is all ready to go.
The Clean Energy Improvement Tax is a program developed by the Province of Alberta.
Officials says it’s a loan you take out from the Town and then use it to improve the energy efficiency of your home. According to Town administration, examples include new furnaces and new water heaters.
Participants pay back the loan through a fee on your property tax bill.
However, the Town emphasizes it is a voluntary program.
Drayton Valley town council gave final reading to the program at their Sept. 15 meeting.
At the meeting, councilor Tom McGee praised the program for being innovative.
While several municipalities across the province have passed the bylaws to bring in Clean Energy Improvement Tax programs, no municipality has launched the program, according to Town officials. Administration explained the delay is because the provincial part of the program was being handled by Energy Efficiency Alberta. The United Conservative Party shut down Energy Efficiency Alberta when they took power in 2019. Officials say the provincial government is still deciding which department will take on the Clean Energy Improvement Tax.
Town administration predicts the program to launch in roughly one year.
