The Drayton Valley Thunder snapped a seven-game losing skid over the weekend.
On Friday, the Whitecourt Wolverines beat the Thunder 3-0 at home. They also outshot Drayton Valley 40-19.
But on Sunday, the Thunder found success in a visit to the Devon Xtreme with a 5-4 overtime win.
Period one saw Breken Northgrave, assisted by Clark Schneider, score his fifth goal of the season, before Devon fired back for a 1-1 tie.
The Xtreme jumped to 2-1 lead in the second frame with a powerplay goal, and about three minutes later, a fight broke out. The Thunder’s Loughlan McMullan and the Xtreme’s Wyatt Ball both earned majors for fighting and a game misconduct.
In the third frame, an interference minor for the Xtreme sent Drayton to the powerplay, where Taynton Lavender scored. He was assisted by Caedem Emmett in bumping the Thunder to a 2-2 tie.
Emmett then pushed Drayton to a 3-2 lead at 7:03 with a goal of his own. Cohen Carter and Clark Schneider got the helpers.
The Xtreme tied things up again 3-3 less than two minutes later, but a holding minor to Devon’s Nolan Eastwood gave the Thunder another shot at the lead shortly after. While on the powerplay, Daniel Zhou and Taynton Lavender assisted Jack Sears in bringing the score to 4-3 in Drayton’s favour.
Then with 3:49 left in the game, the Xtreme tied the Thunder again, this time 4-4, sending the match into overtime.
Just under four minutes into overtime, Caedem Emmett scored unassisted for the Thunder.
The Devon Xtreme currently sit at the bottom of the AJHL North Division, with a record of 13-17-2-1, while the Drayton Valley Thunder have moved up one spot, to fifth, in the South Division, with a record of 11-20-2-0.
Additionally, last week, the Thunder announced that Evan Segstro has been assigned to the Fernie Ghostriders of the KIJHL.
The organization thanks him for his time and contributions in Drayton Valley.
