The Drayton Valley Thunder had a double header against the Fort McMurray Oil Barons over the weekend, with mixed success.
At Centrefire Place on Saturday, Nov. 15, the Oil Barons crushed the Thunder 6-1.
There was no scoring in the first frame and Fort McMurray dominated the second with five goals, two of which were powerplays after the Thunder’s Damian Hill took a minor for high sticking.
Breken Northgrave netted Drayton’s single point at 2:15 into period three, with assistance from Dryden Tomkow and Cohen Carter. About six minutes later, Justin Dumais secured the Oil Barons’ 6-1 win with a shorthanded goal.
Still on the road, on Sunday, the Thunder bounced back with a 3-1 victory.
Again, both teams kept up strong defence to prevent any scoring in the first frame.
In period two, Fort McMurray scored first at 2:13. At 5:49, the Thunder’s Damian Hill tied it 1-1 with assistance from Jerrett Ross.
At 7:39, Spencer Kunz earned a cross-checking penalty for the Oil Barons, giving Drayton’s Will Jamieson a successful shot on the powerplay and the team a 2-1 lead. Dylan Snelgrove and Billy Hooson got the helpers.
Then, with 18 seconds left in the third, Loughlan McMullan scored an empty-netter to bring the Thunder to 3-1.
