The Drayton Valley Thunder are riding a high after two wins in both of last weekend’s away games.
On Oct. 18, they were at the Olds Sportsplex to take on the Olds Grizzlys and came out on top with a 5-2 victory.
A slow first period saw the Thunder’s Jerrett Ross net one unassisted at 14:46 for a 1-0 lead.
In the second, Grizzly Riley Pederson fired back with assistance from Rhett Miller to tie it up 1-1.
The third frame saw most of the action. Drayton’s Will Jamieson boosted the Thunder to a 2-1 lead just one minute in, with the assists going to Caedem Emmett and Breken Northgrave.
Seventeen seconds later, Emmett and Avery Watson helped him net another, his third of the season.
With Drayton now at 3-1, Grizzly Sean Richards pushed back and scored before the two minute mark to narrow that lead to 3-2. Jordan Wales and Sam Giangualano got the helpers.
The Thunder’s Will Jamieson went to the box for tripping at 4:24, but Dryden Tomkow powered through the penalty kill to net an unassisted shorthanded goal at 4:36.
Breken Northgrave scored one more for Drayton, an empty-netter, with just over two minutes left in the period, for the 5-2 finish.
Then on Sunday, the Thunder topped the Camrose Kodiaks 5-3.
The Thunder’s Breken Northgrave started the action off at 5:13, sending Drayton to a 1-0 lead with assistance from Taynton Lavender and Nathan Cole.
Less than 10 minutes later, Nathan Cole netted one of his own to bump that to 2-0. Lukas Miller and Dylan Snelgrove assisted.
At 17:37, Drayton’s Colson Ganser earned a slashing minor, sending Camrose to the powerplay. With the helpers going to Liam Payne and Junshi Hideshima, Kodiak Tucker Tullikopf capitalized 10 seconds later to narrow Drayton’s lead to 2-1.
In the second, Dryden Tomkow notched his fifth season goal at 7:14, Drayton’s third of the night. The assists went to Colson Ganser and Loughlan McMullan.
Camrose’s Junshi Hideshima, with help from Liam Payne again, came back for more at 15:16 to bring the score to 3-2, still in the Thunder’s favour.
Kodiak AJ Schaaf tied it up 3-3 with a powerplay goal just 59 seconds later though, with help from Bowen Grycan and Liam Payne.
A nail-biting third frame didn’t see the tie break until 18:45, when Drayton’s Colson Ganser scored. Will Jamieson got the helper.
With 49 seconds left in the game, the Thunder’s Billy Hooson scored a solo empty-netter, his first goal of the season. This brought the final score to 5-3 in the Thunder’s favour.
