The Edmonton Police Service’s (EPS) Homicide Section is focusing its search for Samuel Bird’s remains on an area surrounding Carrot Creek Junction in the Yellowhead corridor.
Detective Jared Buhler, EPS Homicide Section and lead investigator on Samuel’s case, shared the update Thursday afternoon, stating, “We’re working with the best information we’ve had to date.”
Based on general offender research, Buhler said police believe Samuel’s remains will be found close to an area accessible by vehicle, on land, specifically in a wooded area that could conceal the offender or offenders as they moved Bird’s remains.
Buhler suggested efforts were likely made to conceal the body, but the offender(s) may not have had enough time to do so fully.
“We urge all landowners and users within this corridor and the surrounding areas—in the time that remains before winter—to search your properties and any adjacent areas of interest,” Buhler said.
Otherwise, the general public is asked to avoid the immediate area to give officers room to complete a thorough search.
Agencies participating include Parkland Search and Rescue, the Search and Rescue Dog Association of Alberta, and the Edmonton Regional Search and Rescue Association.
Samuel Bird, 14, was last seen on June 1 before visiting a friend’s house in Edmonton. On Oct. 1, EPS announced the missing teen is presumed deceased and his death is believed to be criminal in nature.
Buhler said the police have suspects, but no arrests have been made.
Anyone with information about Samuel Bird’s disappearance is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com/250.
