Whether you’re new to Alberta or new to Canada, support services will soon be available under one roof in the Town of Drayton Valley.
The Newcomer Support Team of Drayton Valley, a collaborative initiative between multiple local organizations, is holding a grand opening and ribbon cutting tomorrow, Sept. 17.
Alberta Health Services, the Drayton Valley and District Chamber of Commerce, Drayton Valley and District Community Learning Association, and Drayton Valley Municipal Library are just a few of the organizations offering support under this new umbrella.
Services will include support in language skills, job searching, and navigating insurance and utilities. The office also gives newcomers a space to mix, mingle and make connections in the community.
“That’s the mandate of the Newcomer Support Team, to help them out and assist them in whatever way we can, and hopefully make them feel at home in Drayton Valley,” shared Amila Gammana, a Newcomer Support Team Leadership Committee member.
Gammana said the project has been in the works since 2023 and a Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) grant received early this year was the final piece needed to get it off the ground.
You can head to the team’s new official location (#2 5050 50 Avenue) at 3:30 p.m., with a ribbon cutting ceremony taking place at 4 p.m.. Then until 7 p.m., an open house will showcase everything the space has to offer and answer all your questions.
The open house will also be themed as a Mexican Night, in recognition of Mexican Independence Day (Sept. 16), featuring refreshments. There will also be door prizes and delegates from the town and the province.
