Incumbent Mayor Nancy Dodds is running for re-election in the upcoming municipal election.
Please provide a little background on yourself, including how long you’ve lived in the Drayton Valley area.
I have lived in Drayton Valley for most of my life, with a few years throughout my youth and as a young adult outside of the community. As a dedicated woman business owner and proud mayor, I am passionate about serving my community and working tirelessly to make a positive impact. My husband and I are proud parents to two wonderful daughters, and I cherish my family immensely. Their support fuels my passion to create a better, more vibrant community for all residents.
When I’m not working or leading, I enjoy hiking, biking, spending time outdoors, and making memories with my family and friends. I believe in embracing life to the fullest.
Why do you want to run for mayor?
I am running for re-election because there is still important work to be done. My focus remains on continuing efforts in all areas of municipal government. My dedication is driven by a commitment to address issues and challenges and continue to create a more vibrant community for all residents.
What personal or professional experience do you have that you feel would make you a good mayor?
With a strong background in planning and development, this is important in establishing policy, bylaws, and setting strategic direction. This enables me to make well informed decisions about land use, infrastructure, community development, balancing economic development with quality of life and addressing complex issues.
I bring valuable expertise to the role of mayor. Having served two terms already on council, one as a councillor, one mayor, I have firsthand experience navigating the complexities and everyday roles of local governance.
Municipal politics have changed dramatically over the last few years. I understand the importance and the need to advocate on issues and challenges outside of our community, and of municipal authority. I am up for continuing to address these with other levels of government.
I am committed to leveraging my knowledge and experience to lead our community and get back to work on important issues and challenges.
If elected, what would be your top priorities?
If re-elected my focus remains on continuing efforts to secure additional infrastructure funding. We are working with a lot less than what we have had historically, and the rising costs of everything, along with inflation, ends up effecting the residents. I would continue working with the provincial government to secure long-term predictable funding.
There is a lot of provincial things that fall outside of municipal authority. Whether its healthcare, education, or the lack of resources and funding for homelessness, mental health and addiction. These are all issues and challenges that I would continue to work hard to address, and to advocate for these issues, collaborate with the provincial government, and implement local initiatives to support our community.
There are so many other important issues and priorities that I would continue to commit to if re-elected. There is housing shortages, supporting our local businesses, our aging community and the needs of seniors, offering skilled labour and healthcare training and post-secondary education for economic growth and prosperity, and continuing to build on the relationship with Brazeau County.
And of course, listening to the residents and continuing to be their voice at the council table and in the community.
Where can people learn more about you and your priorities?
Over the coming weeks and leading up to the election, you can watch for my Facebook posts and videos, join me for a coffee or night out as I will be inviting residents to engage in conversation with me, or while I’m out in the community discussing my priorities, goals, and the work I plan to continue if re-elected.
Anything you’d like to add?
If re-elected, I’m excited to continue the hard work and making a difference in our community. My background provides a strong foundation for leadership that prioritizes thoughtful community well-being, knowledge of lived experience and challenges over the last eight years, and a passion for my community. I’m ready to get back to work in local government and to continue the efforts and strides that I have accomplished over the last two terms.
