Some of the top rodeo talent in the country is descending on Buck Lake this weekend.
The Drayton Valley Pro Rodeo starts this Friday. The rodeo used to be held indoors in Drayton Valley, but this year, the action moves out to the Buck Lake Rodeo Grounds. Back in March, rodeo organizers decided to move the event outdoors to accommodate Alberta Health Services (AHS) COVID-19 protocols at the time.
Rodeo president Tyson Pietsch, says he hopes that people will enjoy the new location.
“When we were in Drayton, indoors, we usually got around 3,000 people in the course of the weekend. We kind of expect that this weekend, too,” says Pietsch.
Pietsch promises that some of the top talent in Canada will be in the rodeo this year.
“There’s only about 12 rodeos left in all of Canada before the Canadian Finals, so all the top cowboys are going to be there. It’s going to be a good time!”
In addition to the rodeo, there will be other activities. There will be a cash scramble where people will have the opportunity to grab $100 bills off the backs of cows. The band Blackwater Crude will also be performing after the rodeo.
The Sixth Annual Drayton Valley Rodeo runs Aug. 27 and 28 at the Buck Lake Rodeo Grounds. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for kids. Gates open at 3 p.m. and the rodeo starts at 5.
