Your chance to meet some local pilots takes place at the Drayton Valley Airport this week.
On Aug. 26, the Drayton Valley Flying Club will host a Fly-in BBQ, with airplanes from all across Alberta flying in.
Flying Club president Jerry Griner, however, admits they still don’t know how many planes are anticipated.
“Last time there was 40 coming. I don’t expect it’ll be that many for this one,” says Griner. “It’s depending on the weather. If it’s nice weather – which it should be – there’s quite often quite a few people looking for somewhere to fly.”
Griner goes on to say that, due to COVID-19 precautions, turn out for the Flying Club’s fly-in event was pretty low last year. But, he does say this is a great opportunity for people to come out and mingle again.
“There’ll be lots of people there. You can meet with some old friends and new friends. It’ll be a great time of meeting and talking to different people. Definitely a family-friendly BBQ,” says Griner.
Griner also hopes the event draws attention to the Drayton Valley Airport. He points out, it is rather busy with lots of oilfield workers using it. The facility has also been used to fight some of the recent wildfires.
“They had the fire helicopters based here when they were fighting the fires at Entwistle and Wildwood,” shares Griner.
Drayton Valley restaurant, T-Bone’s, will be providing the burgers for the BBQ. The Fly-In BBQ starts at 6 p.m. at the Drayton Valley Airport.
