Parkland RCMP have conducted an investigation into an alleged human trafficking operation in the Stony Plain area, leading to the arrest of multiple suspects.
A total of 12 individuals have been arrested and charged with obtaining sexual services for consideration.
Police say they cannot be named as the charges have not yet been sworn before the court. They were released on appearance notice with court dates pending at the Alberta Court of Justice in Stony Plain.
“Human trafficking is a heinous crime that predominately impacts young women and girls who are compelled or forced to engage in for-profit sex acts,” said Inspector Kevin McGillivray, detachment commander of the Parkland RCMP. “The arrests made during this operation highlight the fact that there are those who would seek to exploit and benefit from trafficked individuals and the Parkland RCMP is committed to investigating those who would harm our most vulnerable citizens.”
RCMP say more information is expected to be released, though no timeline was provided.
