Some tough results for the Drayton Valley Thunder over the weekend as they lost a pair of home games to the Fort McMurray Oil Barons on Friday and Devon Xtreme on Saturday, both by a score of 5-3.
Friday’s game saw the Thunder strike first when Dylan Snelgrove scored his fifth of the season at 3:59 with help from Keston Beagle to make it 1-0 for the home side.
That was followed up with another Thunder goal later in the period from Lukas Miller on the power play. It was his second of the season, with assists coming from Caedem Emmett and Damian Hill to make it 2-0 Drayton Valley.
Fort Mac got two goals of their own in the second period though to make it a tie game after 40 minutes.
Drayton Valley took the lead once again, early in the third, however, when George Monoghan scored his first of the season at 4:08, with assists coming from Keston Beagle and Damian Hill to make it 3-2 Thunder.
The Oil Barons would respond with two more goals though, to make it a 4-3 lead for the visitors.
Fort McMurray finished off the scoring at the 17:57 mark of the third period to make it a 5-3 final.
The Oil Barons also outshot the Thunder 50-31.

On Saturday, Drayton Valley opened the scoring once again at 1:51 of the first period when Nathan Cole scored his fifth of the season, with help from Daniel Zhou, and Jack Sears to make it 1-0 Thunder.
Sears would then put the Thunder up 2-0 when he scored his 10th of the season at 7:19, on the powerplay, with assists from Avery Watson and Taynton Lavender.
Devon would respond with two goals of their own though, including one on the powerplay, to make it 2-2.
Drayton Valley’s Taynton Lavender, however, would regain the lead for the Thunder when he lit the lamp for his 15th of the season at 16:19 to make it a 3-2 game heading into the first intermission. Caedem Emmett and Lukas Miller assisted on the play.
The second period saw Devon tie the game back up 3-3 after 40 minutes.
In the third, the Xtreme pulled ahead for the first time in the game at 10:47, on the plower play, following a goalie interference penalty to Daniel Zhou.
Devon scored once more with just 15 seconds left in the third period to make it a 5-3 final.
Shots on goal were even though, 40-40.
The losses drop the Thunder’s record to 14-33-3-2, and sixth place in the AJHL’s South Division.
The Thunder will wrap up their season with a three-game road trip, starting with the Kodiaks in Camrose on Tuesday, March 10. That will be followed by a pair of games in Grande Prairie against the Storm to finish the season this upcoming weekend.
