Today, Oct. 20, is general election day for the 2025 municipal elections.
People across Alberta will elect their next mayors, councillors, and school board trustees.
Polls will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The Alberta government has enacted a new rule for municipal elections this year that prohibits electronic vote counting. Because ballots must be counted by hand, it will take a bit longer than normal to get results.
Generally speaking, smaller communities say they should have an unofficial count completed late tonight.
Big West Country will have ongoing coverage of the municipal election results on our main news page and broadcasting on 92.9 FM starting at 8 p.m.

Residents may want to give themselves extra time to go to the polls today, as Alberta’s government also introduced a new permanent elector registry. Each municipality is required to provide updated voter information to the provincial government after the election, meaning voters will have an extra form to fill out before casting a ballot — even if you’re already registered.
