The Drayton Valley Thunder narrowly lost two away games over the weekend.
On Saturday, Sept. 27, they were in Drumheller to take on the Dragons, who finished with a 5-4 win.
Dragon Tyler Deakos scored the only two goals in period one, his second and third of the season. He was assisted by Noa Halat and Sullivan Humeniuk, then Luca Dufour and Bradley Gallo.
Drayton tied the 2-0 gap up to 2-2 in the second period.
Taynton Lavender, with support from Daniel Zhou and Jack Sears, notched his first goal of the season at 3:32 while Nash Nicolay got his first near the end of the frame. Kingston Sauter and Avery Watson got the helpers on that one.
In the third, Sullivan Humeniuk put the Dragons back in a 3-2 lead shortly into the period. Then Matthew Hilderman backed that up with an insurance goal at 5:04 for a 4-2 lead in Drumheller’s favour. Nathan Ivey assisted.
Later, with help from the Thunder’s Dryden Tomkow and Jack Sears, Daniel Zhou netted his fourth of the season two minutes later.
But shortly after, Dragon Jensen Marsh, with assistance from Matthew Hilderman and Kaiden Schaupmeyer, bumped their team to 5-3.
Dryden Tomkow led the final push for The Thunder with 7:06 left, narrowing the loss to 5-4 with his second goal of the season. Taynton Lavender and Loughlan McMullan got the helpers.
On Sunday, the team was in Olds to face the Grizzlys, where they fell 3-2.
Just 0:39 into period one, Grizzly Ryland Molde was assisted by Jordin St. Louis and Riley Pederson to score his third goal of the season.
With support from Riley Pederson, Braeden Veldhuizen got an insurance goal for Olds to finish the period with a 2-0 lead.
Drayton led the frame two action, however, with Avery Watson netting his first goal of the season at 4:55.
The team lost momentum, but Drayton Valley’s Taynton Lavender brought it back with a power play goal at 17:08 to tie it up 2-2. He was assisted by Daniel Zhou.
Then in the third, Jordin St. Louis, with Zee Jamal, secured the Grizzlys’ 3-2 win with a shorthanded goal.
Drayton Valley is back on home ice at the Team Auctions Centre on Saturday, Oct. 4 against the Calgary Canucks.
