Drayton Valley’s Mayor and Community Recognition Gala took place last week, and awards were distributed to outstanding community members across nine categories.
Arts and Music
The Arts and Music Award is meant to celebrate the talent and creativity of local artists and musicians. It recognizes individuals who have accomplished achievements in the industry, spread positivity and use their talents to inspire and teach others in the community.
This year’s recipients are Ayla Gartner, Erin Kay, Graham Long, Heather Karlstrom, Liz Lauer and Theresa Dufault.
Business Achievement
This award recognizes a local business or corporation that’s set high standards in the community. The recipients have experienced substantial growth, excelled in customer service, demonstrated innovation in their business model, or incorporated environmentally sustainable practices.
Business Achievement Award recipients include Amber Plaquin, Drayton Valley Mighty Learners, Jasmin Voravongsa, Karla James, Kevin & Lori Young, Kevin Chehade, Ryan Fynn, Sugar Shack, and Tri Electric Ltd.
Community Spirit
Community Spirit celebrates the heart and soul of the town, going to individuals, organizations or not-for-profits that make significant and voluntary contributions to the community. The town says these recipients display outstanding commitment to community enrichment, humanitarian service and the well-being of others.
The 2025 Community Spirit Award recipients are Carolin Charron, Danna Cropley, Dylan Fulks, Jennifer Myslicki, Karen Hickerty, Kelly Forster, Kickstand Drayton Valley Youth Hub, Les Hewlett, Lesley Gigg, Lori Noble & Amanda Krick, Lynn Belanger, Opportunity Home, Ryan Fynn, Sam Itchay, Tessa Viljoen-Hann, and Trisha Howes.
Excellence in Athletics
This award goes to an individual, team or coach on the amateur or professional level that’s shown dedication to both their sport and the community. They have displayed excellence in athletic endeavours, good sportsmanship and a commitment to their training.
This year’s recipients are: Bill Campbell; Cody Blackmore; on behalf of the Drayton Valley Drillers Ringette U16 team, head coach James Bullock and assistant coaches Chris and Melissa Trider; Joanne Nelson, Mandy Layden, Susan Aarts, and Tiff Fertig.
Health Care and Emergency Services
The Health Care and Emergency Services Awards are intended to honour those who display outstanding compassion and commitment in these fields, improving the well-being of community members. Whether they are a nurse, doctor, pharmacist, ambulance workers, RCMP officer, or firefighter, these individuals contribute significantly to the health and safety of Drayton Valley residents.
This award was given to Colleen Sekura, Dr. Michael Murphy, Krista Hanas, Raymond Houle, Ryan Hoetmer, Sheila Blackwood, and Teri Yurkewich.
New Community Organization
As the name suggests, this award is given to an organization that’s been created in the last 18 months and is already having a significant impact on the town. The town says organizations like this are the lifeblood of Drayton Valley, bringing fresh ideas and energy to the community.
Wendy Snow received this year’s New Community Organization Award.
Oil and Gas
Nominees in this category have been put forward by their employees. It is presented to local businesses or corporations in the sector which are involved in community functions and events, make a difference in the workplace and meaningfully support their employees.
The recipients of this award are Stephen Fertig and, representing Nelson Bros Oilfield Services Ltd., Mitch Nelson.
Teachers/Educators
Educators help shape the future of the community by making a difference in the lives of youth. This award is intended to recognize those teachers who have a love for the work and use their talents and creativity to help youth achieve their goals, while acting as positive role models.
Educators who received this year’s award are Deanna Lang, Denise Perry, Georgeina McGee, Grace Wheaton, Joelle Vig, Julia Kormysh, Keri-Lynn Clark, Melissa Tuleta, Michelle Wirstiuk, and Shannon Davie.
Youth Empowerment Award
The Youth Empowerment Award celebrates young leaders making a difference in the community through volunteering, tackling pressing challenges, and making a difference in the lives of their peers. They must be under 18.
Katrina Hamilton and Tyler Lamanilao are this year’s recipients.
