The Drayton Valley Thunder lost some momentum this weekend, falling 4-1 to the Whitecourt Wolverines Friday night, then 4-3 to the Grande Prairie Storm on Sunday.
On Friday, Wolverine Ethan Short, assisted by Cole Barrett, started the action off 8:50 into the first to bring the teams to 1-0.
The second frame saw the Thunder’s Brett Woodard and Whitecourt’s Braydon Franks each take majors for fighting and game misconducts at 7:48.
A minor penalty to Drayton just a few minutes later gave the Wolverines a chance at the power play, which Ty Rayan capitalized on to secure an insurance goal, with helpers from Barrett and Short, making it 2-0.
Just 3:04 into frame three, Cale Chimera scored for Drayton Valley, bringing it to 2-1. He was assisted by Kingston Sauter and Damian Hill.
Whitecourt hammered back just two minutes later, then again with just 53 seconds left in the period, to bring the teams to 4-1. Ulysses Lombardi and Ethan Short scored the last two goals unassisted.
Then on Sunday, the Storm lived up its namesake, rolling in quickly with a goal just 0:18 into period one. Ethan Kronewitt scored, and Max Leduc and Owen Hutzul got the helpers.
Drayton’s Abel Fausak took a slashing minor about eight minutes in, and Kronewitt took advantage of the power play to score his second goal of the night, bringing the score to 2-0. He was assisted by Leduc again, as well as Nicholas Morin.
The Thunder’s Caedem Emmett, assisted by Damian Hill and Jerrett Ross, fired back with his own power play goal at 11:42, after two Storm players were handed minors for hooking and kneeing, making it 2-1.
Grande Prairie’s Kronewitt didn’t let up though, and scored his third goal of the game about three minutes later to gain insurance back for the Storm. Leduc assisted again, as did Harry Minucci.
The packed first period finished with Drayton’s Evan Segstro bringing it to 3-2 with just 23 seconds left, with assistance from Daniel Zhou.
The score remained unchanged throughout period two, and no penalties were given.
Emmett, assisted by Dryden Tomkow, scored his second goal of the game for Drayton Valley, 10:24 into the third.
The 3-3 tie eventually pushed the game into overtime, where Roghan Walker, with assists from Cole Penner and Noah Chadi, secured the winning goal for Grande Prairie at 3:23.
The Thunder hit the ice again on Whitecourt Wolverine territory on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m.
