With Alberta’s summer off to a rough start due to wildfires and even a tornado, the Town of Drayton Valley is working to ensure it’s ready for the next potential evacuation situation.
On July 2, the town unveiled a new enclosed trailer stocked with Emergency Social Services (ESS) supplies that are ready to support its reception centre in times of need. A reception centre is used by the public either locally, or to support other municipalities, when people have been evacuated and need support, officials explain.
This trailer currently includes pillows, blankets, teddy bears, hygiene kits, first aid supplies, feminine products, cleaning supplies and more.
In the event the trailer is deployed and the supplies are emptied, the town notes it could act as a mobile command post instead to support an incident commander, giving it multiple uses.
Drayton Valley is welcoming monetary donations to help it secure additional ESS supplies or community training. These supplies could include way finding signs; games or toys for children and youth; companion animal supplies like leashes, bowls and toys; training for staff and volunteers; or survival kits for giveaways and public awareness.
The supplies fall under the town’s Emergency Management Program and their procurement was supported by a $40,000 donation from the Canadian Red Cross.
