A special weather statement has been issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), warning that conditions are favourable to the development of funnel clouds this afternoon.
ECCC says these types of funnel clouds typically don’t cause any danger near the ground, however there is a chance one could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.
Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous, with the strength to topples trees, toss debris and damage roofs.
Officials say any funnel cloud sighting should be taken seriously and recommend taking shelter if one develops nearby.
These types of clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms, ECCC explains.
This statement is in effect for Parkland County. A full list of affected areas and regular updates are available on the ECCC website.
