Drayton Valley hosts its eighth annual Walk Together for ALS this weekend, and registration is still open.
On June 14 at West Lions Valley Park, the community will gather to walk and raise funds for The ALS Society of Alberta.
Check-in starts at 10 a.m., with the event kicking off at 11 a.m. Online registration closes at 3 p.m. on Friday, June 13, but you can register in person at check-in as well.
There will also be a free barbecue, refreshments and raffle prizes.
So far, $20,386 of the $30,000 goal has been raised and 77 participants are signed up.
According to The ALS Society website, the Drayton Valley ALS Committee consists of five local individuals, including three sisters who lost their mom to ALS in 2016. Pursuing an ALS diagnosis can cost a family up to $250,000, the sisters say, which is why they work to raise funds for The ALS Society of Alberta, which helps with those challenges.
They add, in the last 10 years, the society has helped 12 families in the Drayton Valley area through their Equipment Loan Program and other support programs.
Drayton Valley’s walk ambassador is David MacLean, who says “ALS has changed my path — but not my spirit.” He says he is honoured to serve as the area’s ambassador and invites the community to join him in showing support for those with ALS this weekend.
