The wildfire near the communities of Robb and Mercoal has been downgraded to under control, though smoke is likely still visible in the area.
That’s according to the latest update from Yellowhead County, streamed at 11:30 a.m. Monday morning.
Meanwhile, Yellowhead County firefighters are still working to get the Peers fire downgraded from out of control.
On Sunday evening, windy conditions caused a breakout of the Peers fire into the northeast corner of the town; General Manager of Protective Services Albert Bahri said air support was able to contain it and otherwise, crews have done well at maintaining the lines.
Bahri said the Peers fire hasn’t seen much rain or moisture, and he hopes to get a hand from Mother Nature later in the week. In the meantime, crews will continue to work on the fire, including overnight, and smoke will likely be visible in the area Monday and Tuesday.
A State of Local Emergency is still in place for Yellowhead County, and likely will be until Wednesday at least, Bahri said. The Peers evacuation advisory will be evaluated on Wednesday as well.
In the meantime, a full fire ban is in effect for the area.
“I cannot implore you enough to respect the full fire ban. We are in a critical state, and we simply want to mitigate it as best we can,” commented Deputy Mayor Brigitte Lemieux.
