Mayerthorpe RCMP have charged an individual with second-degree murder following a stabbing attack on the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation.
On Friday, Feb. 7, Mayerthorpe RCMP say they received a report of a stabbing at a residence on Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation. Upon arrival, Mounties say they found the victim, 28-year-old Elzeare Cardinal, deceased.
The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes unit was deployed to take carriage of the investigation and with the help of the Mayerthorpe RCMP detachment, Parkland Police Dog Services, and Edson Forensic Identification Section were able to arrest 33-year-old Dalton Earl Cardinal later that day. Cardinal has been charged with second-degree homicide.
Officials say Cardinal was taken before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody, with his next court date set for Thursday, Feb. 13, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Mayerthorpe.
The Alberta RCMP are thanking the public for their assistance in this investigation.
