The Drayton Valley Thunder were back in action on Friday, Nov. 29, defeating the Fort McMurray Oil Barons 3-2 in an overtime shootout.
Friday’s game started with a goal from Oskar Aitken-Salmons, 17:08 into the first period. Aitken-Salmons second goal of the season was assisted by Taynton Lavender and Cooper Brown.
At the end of the first period, both teams had put 15 shots on net, but the Thunder took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Tucker Tullikopf scored a power play goal just 1:17 into the second period to extend the Thunder’s lead to 2-0. Harper LoLacher and Justin Ivanusec were credited with the assists on Tullikopf’s second goal of the season.
Griffin Gidney got the Oil Barons on the board at 15:37 with a power play goal. Patani Mutambo and Danny Akkouche assisted on Gidney’s third goal of the season.
At the end of the second period, the Drayton Valley Thunder had outshot the Fort McMurray Oil Barons 12-7 and took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
Patani Mutambo of the Oil Barons scored the only goal of the third period at 10:20 to tie the game 2-2. Mutambo’s second goal of the season was assisted by Charles-Olivier Villeneuve and Cody Nordstrom.
At the end of the third period, the Fort McMurray Oil Barons had outshot the Drayton Valley Thunder 9-7 and had managed to force an overtime frame.
Despite the Oil Barons outshooting the Thunder 6-2 in overtime, neither team was able to break the tie, leading to a shootout.

At the end of the game, shots on goal finished tied, 37-37.
Fort McMurray goaltender Vincent Fillon made 34 saves on 36 shots.
Drayton Valley Thunder goaltender Nicholas Cristiano made 35 saves on 37 shots.

The Drayton Valley Thunder were supposed to head down to Olds to take on the Grizzlys on Saturday, Nov. 30, however, that game has been postponed due to mechanical issues with the team bus.
AJHL officials say the date of the make-up game will be provided once it has been set. Updates will be posted to the Big West Country website as they become available.

The Drayton Valley Thunder now have a record of 9-9-3-2, for a total of 23 points, putting them fifth in the AJHL South Division and ninth in the overall League standings.
The Thunder are back in action Friday, Dec. 6, as they head up to Grande Prairie to take on the Storm.
