Wild Rose School Division (WRSD) will be using the proceeds from a recent land sale to fund a new sports field near the newly completed Powerhouse Campus.
The land was freed up when the old H.W. Pickup School and Drayton Valley Christian buildings were demolished, and students converged into the Powerhouse Campus.
The now-demolished H.W. Pickup school sat on municipal reserve land, explained WRSD superintendent Brad Volkman. Every municipality is required to have land set aside for school buildings, and since the division no longer required the land, it was required by the provincial Disposition of Property Regulation to yield it back to the Town of Drayton Valley.
In the case of the former, the now demolished 100-year-old Drayton Valley Christian School building, WRSD owned the land it sat on, and sold it to the Town of Drayton Valley.
“What’s going to happen with those dollars is we’re going to use them towards developing a playing field,” says Volkman. “When we built Powerhouse Campus, we built it on a patch of land that we already owned as well and we covered up an existing football field that is used by students.”
He adds, there’s a shortage of playing space as Frank Maddock High School, H.W. Pickup School and Drayton Christian School are all trying to share one existing playing field.
Volkman says the new sports field plot has already been purchased, and plans are underway to begin developing it.
