The Drayton Valley Thunder played their first game in the 2024 Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) Showcase on Thursday, Sept. 26, at the Max Bell Centre in Calgary, losing 7-1 to the Drumheller Dragons.
Drumheller’s Avery Johnson scored the only goal of the first period on a power play at 13:03. Johnson’s second goal of the season was assisted by Josh Diegel.
At the end of the first period, the Drumheller Dragons and Drayton Valley Thunder were tied for shots, 8-8.
Cooper Brown Scored the only goal of the game for the Thunder just 0:49 into the second period. Brown’s fourth goal of the year was scored shorthanded with an assist from Dryden Tomkow.
The Dragons re-established the lead with a goal from Easton Daneault at 7:57. Ellis Mieyette picked up an assist on Daneault’s second goal of the season.
Ellis Mieyette then scored a goal of his own at 13:11. His third goal of the season was assisted by Josh Diegel and Easton Daneault.
At the end of the second period, the Drumheller Dragons outshot the Drayton Valley Thunder 6-5 and took a 3-1 lead into the second intermission.
The third period was dominated by the Drumheller Dragons with Devon Winder starting things off with his second goal of the season, scored at 2:52, unassisted.
Bradley Gallo then scored his fourth goal of the season, also unassisted, at 8:29.
Ellis Mieyette scored his second goal of the game on a power play at 13:04. Avery Johnson and Jase Johnstone assisted on that goal.
Ayden Peters scored the final goal of the game at 16:38 to secure the 7-1 victory for the Dragons.
The Drumheller Dragons had outshot the Drayton Valley Thunder 15-8 in the third period, and 29-21 overall.
Drayton Valley Thunder goaltender Nicholas Cristiano made 22 saves on 29 shots.
Drumheller Dragons goaltender Sean Cootes made 20 saves on 21 shots in support of the Dragons win.

The Drayton Valley Thunder’s second AJHL showcase game is against the Camrose Kodiaks on Friday, Sept. 27.
