With another school year just around the corner, officials with the province of Alberta have provided a number of back-to-school safety tips.
Drivers are being reminded that the start of a new school year is an exciting time for young children who may not be paying attention to everything that is going on around them. As such, drivers are being reminded to exercise extra caution while in school zones and to always be on the lookout for children crossing the road.
Officials note that flashing lights on a school bus are used to indicate that children are getting on or off the bus and drivers are being reminded that it is illegal to pass a bus on either side of the road while its lights are flashing. The penalty for failing to stop for a school bus with flashing lights is $567.00 and six demerit points.
School zones in Drayton Valley have a 30 km/h speed limit between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., on school days.
Drivers are being asked to exercise extra caution while driving through school zones, especially during the first couple weeks of the school year.
Detailed information about school zones and playground zones can be found on the Government of Alberta website.
