Police have arrested and charged a Drayton Valley resident for multiple firearm offences.
Drayton Valley RCMP say they received a call from an individual at around 5:00 p.m., on Monday, July 8, reporting a male suspect brandishing a firearm from his backpack and pointing it at an individual seated in their parked vehicle. The individual claimed to not know the suspect but was able to provide police with a description and direction of travel after the suspect had left on foot.
After responding to the area, Drayton Valley RCMP say they located the suspect walking into Rotary Park where many families and children were gathered at the splash park. Mounties say they were able to act quickly and the suspect was taken into custody without incident. Officers then searched the suspect and located a loaded firearm and additional ammunition.
Police say 27-year-old Joshua Spiker, a resident of Drayton Valley, was arrested and charged with 12 offences, including:
- Careless use of a firearm.
- Use of a firearm while attempting to commit an indictable offence.
- Pointing a firearm.
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
- Possession of a controlled substance.
Officials say Spiker was remanded into custody until July 11, for his next court appearance at the Alberta Court of Justice in Leduc.
