Thorsby RCMP said just after 10:30 p.m. on Thursday night that a spill of oilfield material is causing a large section of highway to be impassable.
Motorists are being asked to avoid Highway 20 between Township Road 470 and Highway 39, as well as Highway 39 from Highway 20 to Highway 770.
Thorsby, Breton, Drayton Valley and Capital West Traffic RCMP members are all currently working to divert traffic on approximately 38 kilometres of affected highway.
“Motorists are urged to use alternate routes and to not drive on the spilled material as there has been reports of damage as a result of attempting to drive through it,” RCMP say.
“Any motorists that wish to report damage as a result of the spill are asked to contact Breton RCMP detachment during regular business hours. Tow trucks and highway crews are assisting to clear the road which is estimated to take several hours.”
