According to officials with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), the cold weather that has gripped the entire province over the past several days has resulted in some areas setting new record low temperatures.
The Breton area set a new record low for January 11, reaching – 37.6 degrees Celsius, beating the old record of – 37.3 degrees Celsius set in 1968. Records in this area have been kept since 1939.
The Breton area also set a new record low for January 12, dipping to – 42.3 degrees Celsius and surpassing the previous record low of – 34.5 set in 1970.
The Stony Plain area, meantime, set new record low temperatures over the past three days, starting with a new record low temperature of – 40.3 degrees Celsius on January 12, beating the old record of – 35.6 degrees Celsius set in 1971. Records in this area have been kept since 1966.
A new record low temperature for Stony Plan was also set for January 13, dropping to – 41.0 degrees Celsius and beating the old record of – 35.0 set in 1972.
The Stony Plain area also set a new record low temperature for January 14, dipping to – 40.0 degrees Celsius, and beating the previous record low temperature for that date of – 37.9, set in 2020.
