Looking to get back into the win column, the Drayton Valley Thunder took on the Camrose Kodiaks and Olds Grizzlies over the weekend.
On Friday, the Thunder visited the Camrose Kodiaks but lost 6-2.
The first period would go scoreless until about three minutes left in the period, when the Thunder’s Zachary Burns was able to find the back of the net for his second goal of the season after a nice pass from Travis Verbeek putting the Thunder up 1-0.
It would take only a minute and a half into the second period for the Kodiaks to respond as Noah Alveraz would get his fourth of the season, with Carson Whyte and Ryan Sullivan getting the assists to tie the game 1-1. The Kodiaks would use this momentum to get their second goal of the game thanks to Carson Whyte and Ryan Sullivan setting up Callum Gau this time for his 11th of the season to give the Kodiaks the 2-1 lead. Not long after, Alveraz would get his second of the game and fifth of the season after a nice set up from Myles Gauld and Ty Sauer to put the Kodiaks up 3-1. The Kodiaks would not be done there, however, as Myles Gauld would get on the board with his seventh of the season with Carson Brisson and Cooper Sharp picking up the assists, for four unanswered goals for the Kodiaks giving them a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes.
Camrose would carry their offensive momentum into the third period with Carson Brisson finding the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season with Ryan Sullivan and Owen Lansing getting the helpers on the play to put the Kodiaks up 5-1. The Thunder would answer to the 5 unanswered goals with a goal of their own as Jack Silverberg and Brendan Mairs would set up Daniel Kernaghan for his sixth of the season to cut the Camrose lead to three goals (5-2).
However, that would not be enough as Myles Gauld would put the game away with his second of the night and eighth of the season, thanks to some nice passing from Ryan Sullivan and Carson Brisson, finishing the game with a final score of 6-2. The Kodiaks outshot the Thunder 37-24.
Looking to get at least one win over the weekend the Thunder visited the Olds Grizzlies on Saturday and came away with a 7-2 victory.
Drayton Valley started the game off on the right foot as Jack Silverberg would get his third of the season at 4:18 with Brendan Mairs and Daniel Kernaghan getting the assists on the play to put the Thunder up 1-0. The Thunder would strike again as Dimitri Tzaferis and Daniel Kernaghan would set up Brendan Mairs for his fourth goal of the season to give the Thunder a 2-0 lead.
But the Grizzlies would respond as Niklas Gudmundson would bury his fourth of the season at 6:53 with Alex Hollands and Colby Browne getting the apples on the play to cut the lead to just one (2-1). And with about three minutes left in the period, the Grizzlies would claw their way back to tie the game up as Sheldon Kwiatkowski and Tanner Klimpke would set up Logan Neilson for his seventh of the season to tie the game back up 2-2.
Not wanting to back down after giving up back to back goals, the Thunder came out hot in the second period as Gavin Middendorf would find pay dirt with his sixth of the season at 2:01, as Adam Grenier and Luca Ricci would get the assists to once again give the Thunder the lead, 3-2. Thunder captain Kadyn Chabot would capitalize on the one goal lead with a goal of his own as Jack Silverberg and Daniel Kernaghan would set him up for his ninth of the season to give the Thunder a 4-2 lead. And the offense would not stop their as Matthias Bessey would score shorthanded, his second of the season from Stephen Kirkpatrick at 5:27 to give the Thunder a 5-2 lead. And just for safe measure, the Thunder would score one more time before the period was over, with Kadyn Chabot and Jack Silverberg getting the assist on Adam Grenier’s second goal of the season to put the Thunder up 6-2 after 40 minutes.
Maybe to reconcile their loss the previous night, the Thunder would score one more time in the third period to finish off the game with Stephen Kirkpatrick getting his third of the season from Kadyn Chabot and Odin George getting the assists to put the game away 7-2. The Grizzlies outshot the Thunder 42-41.
The Thunder now look to build on their 5-11-0-1 record when they head up the road to face the Sherwood Park Crusaders on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022 at 7:00 p.m..
