With back to school fast approaching, and students eagerly ready to return to class, traffic safety is always a big concern around this time, say local Mounties.
Constable Spencer Renard, Community and School Resource Officer for the Drayton Valley RCMP detachment, says a big issue is the changing of speeds from 50 km/hr in the summer to 30km/hr in the fall and winter.
“It’s always tricky when you go from a couple months of it being a 50, to one day being a 30, so that’s going to be tricky for a lot of people, especially in the morning, people haven’t had their coffee and they’re used to driving to work like they have the past eight weeks.”
Constable Renard also points out, the rules are there to protect you as much as they are to protect other people.
“Don’t rush. It’s not worth causing a traffic incident. If you’re late for school or if mom or dad are late for work, the rules of the road exist for a reason and if you’re doing everything properly, the chances of you getting into an accident go way down.”
The Wild Rose School Division has a staggered start to classes for the 2022-23 school year on Thursday, September 1 and Friday, September 2.
