With rising inflation adversely affecting the price of gas and groceries, more families have turned to local food banks.
Lyndon Muth, President of the Drayton Valley Food Bank, says the rising cost of living affects the food bank in numerous ways.
“The costs of the monthly food that we purchase per month have gone up 20 per cent,” says Muth. “We’ve had 80 new clients that have signed up to receive hampers from the food bank, and we’ve never seen a number like that before.”
The Drayton Valley Food Bank is entirely volunteer-led and aside from a grant they receive, they rely heavily on the contributions from residents in town and surrounding areas.
Muth adds that, “Things that we could use include canned soup, pork and beans, pancake mix, syrup, rice, macaroni, spaghetti, instant potatoes, Kraft Dinner, canned fruit, canned tomatoes, canned stew, coffee, tea, any type of cereal, granola bars, boxed crackers, Cheez Whiz, peanut butter, jam and apple sauces.”
