The Drayton Valley Triathlon is making its return.
Organizers came out to Drayton Valley town council’s March 23 meeting to make their annual request for road closures.
The triathlon was cancelled for the past two years due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Councillor Amila Gammana said it was great to see the event finally return, and asked if they would be changing things up for this race.
Organizer Sharron Oakey said it would be exactly the same as in years past.
“It has been a couple of years since we have been able to run, so we do not want to try anything new,” explained Oakey. “We want to just go with the tried and true, get out there, and get an event done because everyone is really looking forward to being able to do this again.”
Mayor Nancy Dodds was curious to know how many participants they were expecting.
Oakey shared that they had just opened registration, but in the past, they would get between 130 and 200 participants.
“We are actually the very first triathlon of the season in Alberta, so we do not know how it is going to shake out,” revealed Oakey. “I am hoping we hit our 200.”
Council went ahead and granted the road closure. In her closing remarks, Dodds said she was glad to see the event is back.
“I am very excited that this event is going through. Lots of things are happening now so it is nice to see people are excited to be getting out in the community and participating in things like this,” commented Dodds.
The Drayton Valley Triathlon happens on May 7, 2022. More information, including maps of the road closures, are available on the Town of Drayton Valley website.
