The Town of Drayton Valley wants the party to happen, but the question is how to fund it.
At council’s meeting Mar. 2, it was time to hand out the Drayton Valley Community Grants for the first quarter.
The Town traditionally has $20,000 budgeted to give as grants to community organizations, and they hand out $5000 every quarter.
For the first quarter, the Town only received one application. It was from the Drayton Valley Community Foundation (DVCF), and they were asking for $10,000 to fund two community street parties they’re planning for 2022.
While administration recommended granting the full $10,000, council was not so sure. The concern was draining the entire Community Grant fund before other community groups had access to it.
Councillor Amila Gammina made the motion to grant the DVCF the full $5000 budgeted for this quarter, then for administration to find the other money elsewhere.
Councillor Colin Clarke, meanwhile, highlighted some other Town grants being underutilized that the money could come from.
The motion that passed was for the DVCF to receive the $5000 for the first quarter, with the remaining $5000 coming from the other grants.
The DVCF also asked for in-kind donations from the Town. The Town will be entering into negotiations with the DVCF about what that will entail.
