People in the Drayton Valley area will be able to party on the Family Day weekend, as one of the most popular Family Day events makes its return.
The Town of Drayton Valley and the Eagle Point-Blue Rapids Parks Council have partnered up for the Family Day Eve Fire & Ice Festival.
The event promises to be a whole afternoon of fun and excitement. There will be a number of activities for the kids, including wagon rides, and the return of Little Toot, the Trackless Choo Choo Train.
There will be no shortage of snacks either as the Rotary Club will be serving up burgers, while the Drayton Valley Library will be handing out hot cocoa. There will also be maple syrup lollipops.
Last year’s festival had to be greatly scaled back due to COVID-19 restrictions, so this is the first time in two years officials have been able to put on the whole show. Sandra Bannard, the events coordinator for Eagle Point-Blue Rapids, says they are excited to be back.
“We are pretty excited, and I will be honest, a little apprehensive, at the number of people that might come out to the festival,” laughs Bannard. “But you know what? Just come on out. We will figure it out and everyone will have a great time.”
There will be live entertainment as well. The Festival will once again feature performers from the Indigo Circus. Throughout the day, the Ice Queen, the Snow Princess, and a Stilt Walker will be walking among the crowds and posing for pictures.
Once it gets darker out, the Indigo Circus fire artists will come out to preform tricks with fire.
“They usually have two performers that support each other as they do really awesome dramatic tricks with different fire apparatuses,” explains Bannard. “It is quite a delight to watch them.”
When you do come out, Bannard asks that you bring your own chair to curl up by the fires they will have, and your own mug for hot cocoa.
The Family Day Eve Fire & Ice Festival takes place on Feb. 20 from 2 – 8 p.m. at the downtown park across from the Drayton Valley Civic Centre.
