The Drayton Valley Thunder wrapped up their road trip with a stop in Grande Prairie over the weekend for two games against the Storm, but sadly, the Thunder came up empty for wins.
The first game was on Feb. 11, where the Storm beat the Thunder 6-3.
The Thunder were first on the board, as Daniel Kernaghan scored unassisted at 4:19. The Storm tied the game at 4:47, with a goal from Robert Pizzey. The assist went to Cameron Vassos and Lukas Konashuk. The first period ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Storm then dominated the second period, scoring four unanswered goals. Ty Toews scored at 3:56, with an assist from Hudson Foley. Brandon Casey was next at 5:56. The assist went to Robert Pizzey and Lukas Konashuk. Jack Budd then scored unassisted at 9:14. The last goal of the period came at 15:15, as Ethan Strang picked up the assist from Nathanial Bird. When the buzzer sounded, the Storm had a 5-1 lead.
The Storm increased their lead by another goal on the power play at 8:19. Nathanial Bird got the assist from Edge Lambert and Ethan Strang. The Thunder did not go down without a fight, managing to score two goals within a minute of each other. The first came at 11:43, as Evan Forrest scored. The assist went to Lucas Krol and Rylan Brown. The second came at 12:33, as Kadyn Chabot got the assist from Ethan Browne and Hunter Price. When it was all over, it was 6-3 for the Storm.
Despite the loss, the Thunder outshot the Storm 34-32. The Storm came out on top on the power play, going 1 for 3, while the Thunder went 0 for 3.
The rematch on Feb. 12 was a much closer affair with the Storm winning 3-2 in overtime.
Once again, the Thunder were first on the board. Kadyn Chabot scored unassisted on the power play at 14:31. At the end of the first, the Thunder had a 1-0 lead.
The Storm tied things at 2:13 of the second period. Lukas Konashuck picked up assists from Dayne Tews and Robert Pizzey. The Thunder took the lead at 14:43, thanks to Kadyn Chabot’s second goal of the night. This time, Chabot was not alone, getting the assist from Rylan Brown and Hunter Price. At the end of the second, the Thunder still had a one goal lead.
It looked like the Thunder were going to win it, until the final three minutes of the third period. Dayne Tews of the Storm scored at 17:24 on the power play to tie the game 2-2. Tews picked up the assist from Robert Pizzey and Brandon Casey. With regulation ending in a 2-2 tie, the game was headed to overtime.
It was all over four minutes into overtime, as Zach Brooks scored the game-winner for the Storm. Brooks received the assist from Brandon Casey, to give the Storm a 3-2 win.
The Storm outshot the Thunder 36-28 this time out. The Storm were 1 for 4 on the power play, while the Thunder were 1 for 3.
The Thunder wrap up their six game road trip with a record of 1-5. They now make a quick stop at home on Feb. 15 to face the Whitecourt Wolverines, then they’re up in Fort Mac for a weekend series against the Oil Barons.
The Thunder are holding steady in fourth place in the Viterra AJHL North Division, with 66 points and a record of 28-15-10.
